The Three Treasures or Refuges are the unifying principles of all Buddhist traditions. In the development of a modern Buddhist movement in India among the most oppressed peoples, the Dalits. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar spoke of Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity as the heart of Buddha’s teachings. There is a rich resonance between these ways of living and structuring an enlightened society. And that resonance is echoed by Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision of the Beloved Community.

Hozan Alan Senauke is vice-abbot of Berkeley Center and founder of Clear View Project, offering Buddhist-based training and relief in India, Burma, and elsewhere in Asia and the West. He is also the former Executive Director of the Buddhist Peace Fellowship and author of The Bodhisattva’s Embrace, a book of essays on engaged Buddhism.
