Even before March…..

A note from SMSAction! :

Cooking for Urban Peak Next Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2:00 to 5:00 PM

Urban Peak has us on the calendar to cook dinner for their clients on the last Wednesday of every month. Julian, the volunteer manager, has asked that we arrive next Wednesday at 2 p.m. for a brief kitchen orientation. If you want to help, but can’t make it right at 2, I assured them I’d pass on any info to the crew.

Let Kelley Heider know if you’re interested in coming, and when you can arrive–I think we can use the help at any point until about 4:30 because we’ve been asked to finish up and be out of the kitchen by 5 p.m. We’re cooking for 20 people and I’m supplying the recipe and ingredients this first time (we can collaborate for future) just to make it easier.

March-April Koan Series

Sundays, March 4, 11, 18 and 25, April 22 and 29
3:00 to 5:00 PM
at Creek Bend Zendo

Our Spring koan series will arrive a little ahead of Spring, to usher it in.
The koans will be selected as companions to our exploration of the elements of our sutra service.
These are meditative Sunday afternoons together, in which we’ll introduce a koan, sit with it for a while, and then bring our own experiences, questions, and expressions of it together and witness where it takes us.
Koans are often records of, or slivers of intimate conversations about the way things are, which invite us into relationship, not only with people who might be from far away and long ago, but with our own lives and each other.   They ask the questions that we often are too busy to consider—the very ones that can transform the obstacles of a difficult life into the open gates we so long for.

No prior koan experience is needed to be part of this party.

Mar 6, 13, 20    Refuge Group Forming
with Sarah Bender

Saturdays, March 17, 24 and 31
1:00 to 3:00 PM
Creek Bend Zendo, 7528 Jenkin Place

Dear Friends,
One of the beautiful practices our tradition offers is the practice of refuge-taking.  Right in the midst of the sorrow and trouble, the beauty and delight and simply the daily doing of our human lives, are moments (more than we might notice!) when thoughts drop away, and the vivid spacious wonder of just being is present.  At these moments a deep tenderness towards all beings can appear—and in its wake, we notice a longing to be helpful.
Our Zen tradition offers a way of honoring this longing, and allowing it to power our practice of finding and strengthening goodness in our lives.  Allowing it to be a true refuge right in the midst, in the core of each moment.  Never absent.
We call this way “taking refuge in the Bodhisattva Way.”   It includes a range of practices, all of our life practices in fact, but in particular, an investigation of how awakening to the way things really are is expressed in our Buddhist ethical teachings, our precepts.
When a few sangha members have expressed a desire to delve into this way of refuge, we call a few meetings to explore, and then launch a series of gatherings to study and practice the precepts together (precepts are found starting on page 5-1 of our sutra book).  This series will stretch into the summer, take a pause, and resume in the fall.
To start, we’ve scheduled three meetings in March: March 17, 24 and 31, 1:00 to 3:00 at Creek Bend Zendo.   Anyone who is curious about refuge is welcome to join in!   Please let me know if you plan to attend, or contact me with questions at sembender@gmail.com.
It’s been a rough winter for many of us, and refuge is a real and present need. It is also a real and present reality, fortunately!
I’m looking forward to delving into it with you.
Sarah Bender

A March Poem

Shoveling Snow With Buddha

In the usual iconography of the temple or the local Wok
you would never see him doing such a thing,
tossing the dry snow over a mountain
of his bare, round shoulder,
his hair tied in a knot,
a model of concentration.

Sitting is more his speed, if that is the word
for what he does, or does not do.

Even the season is wrong for him.
In all his manifestations, is it not warm or slightly humid?
Is this not implied by his serene expression,
that smile so wide it wraps itself around the waist of the universe?

But here we are, working our way down the driveway,
one shovelful at a time.
We toss the light powder into the clear air.
We feel the cold mist on our faces.
And with every heave we disappear
and become lost to each other
in these sudden clouds of our own making,
these fountain-bursts of snow.

This is so much better than a sermon in church,
I say out loud, but Buddha keeps on shoveling.
This is the true religion, the religion of snow,
and sunlight and winter geese barking in the sky,
I say, but he is too busy to hear me.

He has thrown himself into shoveling snow
as if it were the purpose of existence,
as if the sign of a perfect life were a clear driveway
you could back the car down easily
and drive off into the vanities of the world
with a broken heater fan and a song on the radio.

All morning long we work side by side,
me with my commentary
and he inside his generous pocket of silence,
until the hour is nearly noon
and the snow is piled high all around us;
then, I hear him speak.

After this, he asks,
can we go inside and play cards?

Certainly, I reply, and I will heat some milk
and bring cups of hot chocolate to the table
while you shuffle the deck.
and our boots stand dripping by the door.

Aaah, says the Buddha, lifting his eyes
and leaning for a moment on his shovel
before he drives the thin blade again
deep into the glittering white snow.

How can we make our voices heard, while planting the seeds of deep social transformation?May we seek to find no answers but only deepen our curiosity and wonder!

Please join us, April 19th at Her Story Cafe, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Let me know if you have any questions, thanks!
